Sitting on the donkey is  Jeanne Gonzalès, the artist's sister, Eva, while Henri Guérard, the artist's husband, looks on. After Eva Gonzales's sudden death at the age of thirty-four, Jeanne and Henri married. This unfinished painting remained in the artist's studio at her death. It clearly shows the influence of Éduard Manet, who became the artist's teacher after she worked as a model for him. The Donkey Ride is the only work by Gonzalès in a public collection in Great Britain.
Oil on canvas, between 1880-1882.
