This early work by Turner shows a view of the Avon Gorge and the elegant houses of Bristol Hotwells on the far side of the river. The artist has populated the scene with sailors working in the foreground, but he has taken  artistic licence and created a composition that is nautically incorrect - the vessel to the left would have not navigated this narrow part of the Avon under full sail. The size of this watercolour, and its execution and finish, confirm it as an 'exhibition watercolour'.
Watercolour over pencil on paper, 1791-1792.
