Metres from where Denis stood, red-hot lava flowed beneath the crust of the lava field on the flank of the Plosky Tolbachik volcano. Ahead, out of a deep crevice, rose a plume of gas ‘like dragon’s breath’. Kamchatka Peninsula, in the Russian Far East, is one of the world’s most active volcanic regions.
