This print features a dog looking out the window and has been one of our most popular paintings in our collection.
Will He Come Back? by Robert Morley (1857-1941), oil on canvas, circa 1918. Purchased, 1923.
A dog waits patiently for its master to return, but the 1st WW certificate of condolence confirms that Sapper Alexander Murray of the Royal Engineers will never come back. The citation states, he ‘passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom’. The artist, a well-known painter of animals who live in Gloucestershire, may or may not have known Alexander Murray, but two nephews of his were killed in the war.
