This view shows what is now Bristol city centre, looking towards Lewin's Mead, with the towers of St Mark's on the left and St Michael's Church on the hill in the distance. When this picture was painted, Bristol was the second most important port in England, after London. Ships sailed up the Rivers Avon and Frome into the heart of the city carrying, amongst other cargoes, raw materials for the potteries and glasshouses, and taking away quantities of finished pots bound for Ireland, North America and the West Indies.
