This is one of a series of four large watercolours showing the River Avon under different effects of light. Sheep are being driven up the Avon along the tow-path, the area known as Sea Walls is on the left and the group of buildings beyond is the 'New Hotwell'. This thermal spring was leased out for development as a spa in 1730 but it was a lonely place and access was difficult. The spa enjoyed a brief revival after John Wesley attributed his cure to it in 1754, but the pump room ultimately fell into ruin and was used by quarrymen for shelter.
Watercolour on paper with scratching-out, circa 1825.
