Dressed in orange, a young woman is seated in the foreground, slightly turned to the right and studying an open book or portfolio in her lap. Another woman in a similar dress is standing just behind her on the left, leaning forward and looking over her shoulder. Renoir painted these girls several times but their identity is unknown. Although this is a pastel drawing, it was made on such a grand scale that it would have had the status of an oil painting. Pastel became an increasingly popular medium during the 1880s, allowing the artist to draw with colour, and the Impressionists handled this medium freely.
