Bristol from the South-East (print)
A view of the distant skyline of Bristol taken from the Bath Road, near Totterdown; it illustrates perfectly the ultimately unsustainable concentration of churches in the old city; this etching was made for ‘The Pocket Print Magazine or Select Views of Cities, Sea-Ports, Towns and Villages’, Vol. III, published January 1, 1796, and is based on a 1791 watercolour by J M W Turner.
Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (1775 - 1851), known in his time as William Turner, is perhaps the best-loved English Romantic artist. He became known as 'the painter of light', because of his increasing interest in brilliant colours.
