Rolinda Sharples (1793-1838) was an English painter who specialised in portraits and genre paintings in oil. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Society of British Artists, where she became an honorary member.
This is an oil painting on board showing a three-quarter length portrait of a seated Angelica Catalani (1780-1849), Italian opera singer. In Ellen Sharples' (mother of the artist) diary for February 1814, she records "Went to a concert to hear Md Catalina [sic] on the 11th..." however, this work was not painted until at least 1821, probably when Madame Catalani performed at a music festival held in Bristol from 30 October onwards. The soprano was also resident in Bath at this time.
