This is an unusual view of Bristol, seen from Rownham Hill on the opposite side of the river. We see only Windsor Terrace in Clifton, with the city in the distance. It has a thoughtful mood and Leigh Woods is seen as a place of retreat from the stresses of daily life. The Reverend John Eagles, an amateur artist, wrote of, ''Those beautiful woods opposite Clifton separated from it by the muddy Avon… dividing… the cares and toils of a busy world from the regions of Elysium''.
Francis Danby ARA (1793-1861) was an Irish painter of the Romantic era. His imaginative, dramatic landscapes were comparable to those of John Martin. Danby initially developed his imaginative style while he was the central figure in a group of artists who have come to be known as the Bristol School.
