Marcellus Coffermans (1520-1581) was a Flemish renaissance painter who was active in Antwerp from 1549 to 1581.

He painted devotional panels and small-scale altarpieces and copies after works of painters of earlier generations. He worked in an old-fashioned idiom derived from the world of the Flemish Primitives such as Gerard David, Hugo van der Goes and Rogier van der Weyden as well as the graphic work of Martin Schongauer.

Having come to pay homage to the newborn Christ, the shepherds tentatively enter the presence of the Holy Family. The Virgin kneels before her child, and Saint Joseph is shown as an elderly man praying in the background. The grand but dilapidated building signifies the passing of the Old Dispensation. A different version of this subject attributed to Marcellus Coffermans (Metropolitan Museum, New York) is likewise painted on a very small scale and also includes a group of three angels at the top of the composition.
