A view of the gothic church of St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, without its spire; the low view point, upright format and reduced colour range may have been influenced by the architectural drawings of Thomas Malton; Turner was about 16 years of age when he made this work, and had recently taken lessons from Malton, as well as the formal teaching he received at the Royal Academy Schools from 1789; this work was once in the possession of a Miss Dart, a niece of the Bristol-based Narraway family, whom Turner stayed with whilst in Bristol.
