Joseph Horlor (1809-1887) is known for Landscape and marine painting. Joseph Horlor was born in Bath in 1809 and was a landscape painter of Welsh scenes and coastal views. He exhibited thirteen paintings at the British Institution and eleven at Suffolk Street between 1834 and 1866.

Horlor’s artistic style is characterised by a striking resemblance to Dutch Golden Age painters—particularly Rembrandt and Jacob Maris—a stylistic choice that speaks volumes about his intellectual engagement with European art history. He eschewed dramatic chiaroscuro effects favoured by Turner, opting instead for muted tonal palettes and subtle gradations of light and shadow.

This technique prioritised atmospheric perspective and textural detail, allowing Horlor to convey the palpable sense of place inherent in his landscapes. His brushstrokes were deliberate and considered, meticulously blending colors to achieve an illusion of depth and luminosity—a hallmark of Dutch landscape painting.
