A Procession of Pilgrims outside St Mary Redcliffe
Edward Villiers Rippingille (1790-1859) was an English oil painter and watercolourist who was a member of the informal group of artists which has come to be known as the Bristol School. In that group he was a particularly close associate of both Edward Bird and Francis Danby.
In the 1820s Edward Villiers Rippingille painted several historical works of medieval subjects. They were a departure from his usual everyday scenes and portraits, and are not characteristic of the Bristol School. He probably hoped to find a purchaser from amongst Bristol's antiquarians for this imaginary scene. The unfamiliar subject matter seems to have been a struggle for him.
