Thomas Hennell (1903-1945) was a British artist and writer who specialised in illustrations and essays on the subject of the British countryside. He was an official war artist during the Second World War and was killed while serving in Indonesia in November 1945.
This is a framed colour drawing on paper showing a fjord with trawlers and other ships. In the foreground this is a quay with a crane. In 1943, Hennell was sent to replace Eric Ravilious as official artist in Iceland, when this drawing was made. Hvítanes is in the Westfjords of north-west Iceland.
This work is one of 40 given to Bristol as part of the War Artists'' Advisory Committee's distribution of works to British museums and galleries in 1947.
