Lucien Pissarro (1863-1944) had been taught to paint by his father, the French Impressionist Camille Pissarro.
Lucien painted in an Impressionist manner throughout his life, specialising in quiet, rural scenes of England – his adopted country – and France.
He lived in East Knoyle, near Salisbury, during 1916 and 1917. He started painting this picture out-of-doors, beginning it as a foggy scene but then transforming it into a snow scene at sunset.
