View of the Grand Canal, Venice
Francesco Albotto (1721-1757) was an Italian painter from Venice, mainly producing vedute. He was a pupil of Michele Marieschi.
This view of the junction of the Grand Canal and Cannaregio Canal in Venice was first attributed to Francesco Albotto in 1987. The artist based the scene on a composition by his teacher, Michele Giovanni Marieschi, to whom this painting was previously attributed. The works of Marieschi and his pupil are often confused because of their stylistic similarity and the scarcity of paintings signed by them. The inclusion of a statue and balustrade at the junction of the waterways dates the picture to after May 1742, when a statue of Saint John Nepomuk was erected on this spot.
