Although Hippolyte-Benjamin Adam (1808-1853) is mainly known for his portraits and figure paintings, this view demonstrates his accomplishment as a landscape artist. The Hôpital Saint Louis is shown beyond the Canal Saint Martin, which runs to the east of the Parisian Gare de l'Est. Founded in 1607, the hospital still functions, although its setting is now built up and the hospital is no longer visible from the far side of the canal. The hills in the distance, traditionally quarried for their gypsum deposits used in plaster of Paris, now form part of the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont which was laid out in 1866–1867.
